Automatic Air Suspension System

Starting in 1990, the Chrysler Imperial (called a Y body) will have available a fully automatic, computer controlled, air suspension system.

The system consists of four air springs (no metal springs). The front springs are integrated to be part of the strut assemblies. Each spring is connected pneumatically (through nylon lines) to a compressor which is driven by an electric motor. The compressor and motor are located behind the right rear wheel house. The motor powers up through a computer controlled relay found in the trunk.

Air used by the system enters and exits through a dryer attached to the motor/compressor assembly. Air to and from the dryer is supplied through a rubber hose plumbed to the inside of the right rear trunk area. Compressed air from the system is vented through a computer controlled main solenoid valve.

Individual control of air flow in and out of the front air springs is made possible through computer controlled solenoid valves attached to (but serviced separately from) each spring. Similar solenoid valves are found at the rear springs, but the computer controls these valves as a pair.

Accurate height control is made possible through feedback from three height sensors. One is located in each front spring and one is located in the right rear shock absorber.
