Disassembly/Assembly

NOTE: This procedure is virtually the same as the procedure for standard steering columns.

DISASSEMBLY

1. Remove wiring cover retainers and wiring cover.
2. Remove shift lever by driving retaining roll pin out with suitable punch.
3. Remove breakaway capsules and secure steering column in vise.
NOTE: On vehicles equipped with intermittent wipe or intermittent wipe with speed control, remove turn signal lever from lock housing.
4. Remove wiper/washer switch assembly. Pull cover up control stalk and unscrew control stalk sleeve from wiper/washer switch.
5. Move control stalk shaft to full clockwise position, then by pulling straight out, separate shaft from switch.
6. Remove upper bearing and turn signal switch retaining screws. Remove retainer and move switch to side.
7. Disconnect horn and key light ground wires and unscrew ignition key lamp retaining screw. Move ignition key lamp assembly to side.
8. Remove bearing housing to lock housing screws. Remove snap ring from upper end of steering shaft, then remove bearing housing.
NOTE: Do not allow steering shaft to slide out of jacket.
9. Remove lockplate spring and lockplate from shaft and remove shaft through lower end of column.
10. Remove ignition key. Remove screw and lift out buzzer/chime switch.
11. Remove ignition switch to column jacket screws, rotate switch 90° on rod and lift off rod.
12. Remove dimmer switch retaining screws and switch from actuator rod.
13. Remove bellcrank mounting screws and slide bellcrank up until it can be disconnected from ignition switch actuator rod.
14. Place lock cylinder in Lock position and remove key. Install small diameter screwdriver in lock cylinder release holes and push in to release lock retainers while pulling lock cylinder out of bore.
15. Pull lock lever and spring assembly from housing. Remove lock housing retaining screws and the lock housing plate and housing from jacket.
16. On column shift automatic models, loosen shift tube setscrew in shift housing and remove shift tube through lower end of jacket.
17. On models with floor shift, remove spring securing shift housing to mast jacket, rubber bumper and the shift housing.

ASSEMBLY

NOTE: Apply a thin coat of multi-purpose grease to all friction surfaces during assembly.
1. Clamp column in vise and check column tube to mandrel rivets for tightness. Use aluminum pop rivets (1/8 inch grip) for replacement.
WARNING: Do not use steel rivets. Rivets at this joint must shear upon impact.
2. Install shift tube and/or gearshift housing as follows:
a. Apply coat of multipurpose grease to shift housing seat in mast jacket.
b. On models with floor shift, install rubber bumper and spring securing housing to mast jacket.
c. On column shift models, insert shift tube from lower end of column, ensuring key on tube engages slot in housing, hold assembly together and tighten setscrew to secure assembly.
3. On all models, place crossover load spring and gearshift lever into housing and tap pivot pin into place.
4. Assemble key cylinder plunger and spring and install in lock housing.
5. Install shift lever gate on lock housing.
6. Move shift lever to mid-position, then with keyway in housing indexed with slot in jacket, seat lock housing in jacket. Insert screws and torque alternately to 90 lb-in.
7. Position dimmer switch pushrod into switch. Compress switch until two 0.093 inch drills can be inserted into alignment holes. Place upper end of pushrod into washer/wiper switch. With slight rearward pressure on switch, install screws and remove drills.
NOTE: Switch should click when lever is lifted and when lever returns, just before stop in down position.
8. Assemble lock levers, lock lever springs and pin. Install assembly into housing with lock lever spring leg firmly seated in lock casting notch.
9. Place gearshift lever in Park position. Install ignition switch actuator rod from bottom through oblong hole in lock housing and attach to bellcrank. Position bellcrank onto mounting surface while pulling ignition switch rod down column.
10. Install ignition switch onto ignition switch actuator rod. Rotate 90° to lock rod into position.
11. Insert key into lock cylinder, turn to Lock position and remove key. Insert cylinder into housing so that it contacts switch actuator. Insert key, press inward and rotate cylinder until cylinder locks into housing.
12. Place key cylinder and ignition switch in Lock position (second detent from top) and tighten ignition switch mounting screws.
13. Remove ignition key. Install buzzer/chime switch wires behind wiring post and down through space between jacket and housing. Position switch in housing, then install and tighten mounting screws.
14. Install lower bearing support, bearing and spring on steering shaft. Install O-ring in lower groove on upper end of shaft. Insert shaft into column assembly.
15. Press upper bearing into upper bearing housing, ensuring bearing is fully bottomed in housing.
16. Install lockplate, upper bearing spring, upper bearing housing and upper bearing housing retaining screws, press steering shaft into column to compress springs, then install upper bearing snap ring, ensuring snap ring is fully seated in shaft groove and bearing housing recess.
17. Install ignition key lamp assembly and turn signal switch on bearing housing. Install bearing retainer plate and torque screws to 24 lb-in.
NOTE: Position ground wires toward ground clips before torquing.
18. Install ground clips for ignition key lamp and turn signal switch onto bearing retaining plate.
19. Assemble wiper switch, shaft and cover or speed control switch, cover and knob. Install washer/wiper switch assembly into lock housing and fasten to turn signal switch.
20. Install turn signal lever cover, breakaway capsules and wiring cover over wires and retainers.
