SUBJECT: Start and Stall Vehicles Not Equipped With Vehicle Theft Alarm (VTA)

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Vehicle cranks, starts and immediately stalls. This may be caused by the engine controller, on vehicles not equipped with Vehicle Theft Alarm (VTA). The controller may in error look for a VTA signal, and when one is not received, prevent the engine from running.


DIAGNOSIS:

1. With the DRB II connected to the engine diagnostic connector, select "SYSTEMS MONITORS" under "ENGINE DIAGNOSTICS". Select "THEFT ALARM STATUS". The display will read "FUEL ALLOWED".

2. Crank the engine. If "FUEL NOT ALLOWED" is displayed, continue with the repair procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This repair involves replacing the Engine Controller with a revised one.

1. Remove the engine controller as outlined in the service manual and install the appropriate one from the list above.

2. Type the required information on the Authorized Modification Label, PN 4275086 as illustrated in Figure 1, and attach the label near the VECI (Vehicle Emissions Control Information) label.
