Testing
PRELIMINARY CHECKS1. Inspect for collision damage, mechanical wear or obstructions.
NOTE: Sub-freezing weather conditions combined with moisture can cause failure of the concealed headlamp system.
ONE HEADLAMP DOOR DOES NOT OPERATE
1. Check headlamp door pivot and crank not frozen.
2. Check headlamp door torsion bar sleeve and clip for wear.
3. Check headlamp door crank screws (missing or broken).
4. Check headlamp torsion bar disengaged or broken.
ERRATIC HEADLAMP DOOR OPERATION
1. Check for mechanical resistance in headlamp door pivots.
2. Check for corroded, bent or misaligned parts.
3. Check for stripped motor reduction gears, if gears are stripped, replace motor.
4. Check for bad body controller, see Electrical Diagnostic Procedures.
HEADLAMP DOOR FITS POORLY, BANGS OR RATTLES
1. Check alignment of mounting brackets, door/crank lateral adjustment collar and adjustable stops.
2. Check headlamp door pivot brackets, including bushings.
3. Check motor for wear.
ELECTRICAL DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES
Headlamp Doors Inoperative
1. Remove the right kick panel.
2. Turn headlamp switch "OFF".
3. Using a voltmeter probe the back of the body controller 25 way (redd) connector, terminals 17 and 18. Do not disconnect body controller.
^ If voltage not present at both terminals go to step 4.
^ If voltage is not present at go to step 9.
4. Turn headlamp switch "ON".
5. Using a voltmeter probe the back of the body controller 25 way (red) connector, terminals 17 with low beams "ON", and 18 with high beams "ON". Do not disconnect body controller.
^ If battery voltage is present at both terminals go to step 6.
^ If battery voltage is not present at both terminals go to step 9.
6. Turn the headlamp switch "OFF".
7. Using a voltmeter probe the back of the body controller 25 way (red) connector, terminal 24. Do not disconnect body controller.
8. Turn headlamp switch "ON". Battery voltage should be present initially and go to zero within 2 seconds.
^ If voltage does not go to zero, check the body controller connector for damaged, pushed out, or spread terminals and repair or replace as needed. If connector is OK replace the body controller.
^ If battery voltage is present and goes to zero within 2 seconds check headlamp relays and wiring of headlamp doors.
9. Check the headlamp switch and wiring.
