SYMPTOM/CONDITION
Some 1990 3.3L engines may exhibit an oil leak at the rear of the engine in the area of the rear crankshaft seal. This leak may be the result of one or more of the four untapped holes in the rear crankshaft flange being drilled too deep. A leak in this area may be mis-diagnosed as a rear crankshaft seal or oil pan leak.
DIAGNOSIS
Remove the torque converter dust cover. Inspect rear of the block for evidence of oil. A circular spray pattern generally indicates a crankshaft seal leak. A leak that tends to run straight down the block indicates a cam or oil gallery plug leak, seal retainer leak or porous block. In any case, the transaxle will need to be removed for further inspection.
Figure 1:
After removing the transaxle, remove the torque converter drive plate. Carefully inspect the four holes in the crankshaft flange as shown in Figure 1. The holes should be dry. If any one of the four holes have indications of oil accumulation perform the repair procedure. If the holes are dry, repair the source of the oil leak as necessary.
NOTE: IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO REPLACE THE REAR CRANKSHAFT
SEAL WHEN PERFORMING THE REPAIR PROCEDURE UNLESS THERE IS EVIDENCE THAT THE SEAL IS ALSO LEAKING.
PARTS REQUIRED
4 - Plugs PN T3075032
1 - Stud N 'Bearing Mount PN 04318032
8 - Bolts PN 06501193
REPAIR PROCEDURE
This repair involves installing four cup plugs in the crankshaft flange.
1. Thoroughly clean and dry the four untapped holes in the crankshaft flange.
2. Lightly coat the outside diameter of one of the cup plugs PN T3075032 with Stud N 'Bearing Mount PN 04318032.
3. Using a 5/16 inch diameter blunt nose punch, drive the cup plug into one of the holes until the end of the plug is slightly below the surface of the crankshaft flange.
4. Repeat the process on the three remaining holes.
5. Install the torque converter drive plate using the new bolts, PN 06501193. Tighten the bolts to 70 ft.lbs. (95 N-m) torque.
6. Install the transaxle.
