Early Production
Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Routing at Trailing Arm:
Body Routing of Speed Sensor:
The wheel sensor has a permanent magnet and coil that generates a small AC voltage, due to the magnetic induction created as the tone-wheel rotates.
The rear tone-wheel (toothed sensor ring) is an integral part of the hub assembly and may be inspected by removing the wheel speed sensor and looking through the hole, or by removing the rotor. If the tone-wheel is damaged, the entire hub assembly must be replaced.
INSPECTION
Inspect tone-wheel for missing or cracked teeth, this can cause erratic sensor signals.
Tone-wheel should show no evidence of contact with the wheel speed sensor. If contact was made, determine cause and correct.
Excessive runout of the tone-wheel can cause erratic wheel speed sensor. Replace assembly if runout exceeds approximately 0.010 in. (0.25 mm).
REMOVAL
1. Raise and support vehicle.
2. Remove wheel and tire assembly, then the sensor assembly grommet from underbody and pull harness through hole in underbody.
3. Remove sensor connector lock and unplug connector from harness.
4. Remove sensor spool grommet clip retaining screw from body hose bracket, just forward of trailing arm bushing.
5. Remove sensor assembly clip, located on inboard side of trailing arm.
6. Remove outboard sensor assembly retainer nut.
7. Remove sensor head screw and carefully remove sensor head from adapter assembly. If the sensor has seized, due to corrosion, DO NOT USE PLIERS ON SENSOR HEAD. Use a hammer and a punch and tap edge of sensor ear, rocking the sensor side to side until free.
INSTALLATION
1. Reverse procedure to install being sure to coat sensor with High Temperature Multipurpose E.P. Grease before installing into adapter assembly. Tighten screw to 60 lb-in (7 N-m).
