Early Production

The wheel sensor has a permanent magnet and coil that generates a small AC voltage, due to the magnetic induction created as the tone-wheel rotates.

The front tone-wheel is an integral part of the outer C/V joint on the driveshaft assembly. Inspection of the tone-wheel can be made by removing wheel assembly. If tone-wheel is damaged, the complete outboard C/V joint must be replaced.

INSPECTION
Inspect tone-wheel for missing or cracked teeth, this can cause erratic sensor signals.
Tone wheel should show no evidence of contact with the wheel speed sensor. If contact was made, determine cause and correct.
Excessive runout of the tone-wheel can cause erratic wheel speed sensor. Replace assembly if runout exceeds approximately 0.010 in. (0.25 mm).

REMOVAL
1. Raise and support vehicle.
2. Remove wheel and tire assembly, then the retaining screw and clip that holds sensor assembly to fender shield.
3. Carefully remove sensor assembly grommet from fender shield, then remove sensor connector lock and disconnect sensor.
4. Remove strut damper bracket retaining clip.
5. Remove the three sensor assembly grommets from the retainer brackets.
6. Remove sensor head screw then carefully remove sensor head from steering knuckle. If the sensor has seized, due to corrosion, use a hammer and a punch and tap edge of sensor ear, rocking it side to side until free. DO NOT USE PLIERS ON SENSOR HEAD.

Front Wheel Speed Sensor Routing:

INSTALLATION
1. Coat sensor with High Temperature Multipurpose E.P. Grease before installing into the steering knuckle. Install screw, tighten to 60 lb-in (7 N-m).
2. Connect sensor connector to harness and install sensor connector lock.
3. Push sensor assembly grommet into hole in fender shield. Install clip and screw.
4. Install sensor grommets in brackets on fender shield and strut damper. Install retainer clip on retainer at strut damper.

Body Routing of Speed Sensor:

CAUTION: Proper installation of wheel speed sensor cables is critical for continued system operation. Be sure that cables are installed in retainers. Failure to install cables in retainers, as shown, may result in contact with moving parts and/or overextension of cables, resulting in an open circuit.
