SUBJECT: Battery Goes Dead Glove Box Light Stays On
MODELS: 1990 AC - DYNASTY/NEW YORKER LANDAU/SALON AY - IMPERIAL/NEW YORKER FIFTH AVENUE
SYMPTOM/CONDITION
Battery goes dead after parking the vehicle for 4-5 days. This condition may be caused by the glove box light switch being bent out of adjustment. This allows the glove box light to remain on causing a 220 mA electrical drain.
DIAGNOSIS
A normal electrical system should draw no more than 30 mA with the ignition in the off position after all equipment has electronically timed out. If a vehicle shows excessive Ignition Off Draw (IOD), the following diagnosis should be performed.
1. Roll down the passenger window. This will allow access to the glove box door without opening the car doors.
2. Perform the Ignition Off Draw (IOD) Test as described on page 8A-3 of the 1990 Front Wheel Drive Electrical, Fuel and Emission Service Manual. It is normal for vehicles to have an IOD that exceeds the 30 mA spec until all of the electronic modules (body computer, EATX module, air suspension module, etc.) have timed out. This can take up to 65 minutes depending on how the vehicle is equipped. If the ammeter still shows higher then 30 mA after the 65 minute period has passed, with the door closed reach in through the window and open the glove box (do not open the door as this will activate the illuminated entry function). The bulb in the glove box draws approximately 220 mA. The amp reading should increase by that amount. If no increase occurs and the bulb is on, the following procedure must be performed.
PARTS REQUIRED
1 Glove box lock assembly PN 5265554
1 Glove box lock cover PN 5265559
1 Glove box module (if needed): PN DS33KV8 - CHAMPAGNE
PN DS33KB9 - BLUE PN DS33KH7 - MAHOGANY PN DS33KR8 - RED PN DS33KS8 - GRAY PN DS33KX8 - BLACK
REPAIR PROCEDURE
This procedure involves replacement of the glove box lock assembly with a new lock assembly and cover.
1. Remove the lock assembly cover and the lock assembly. Install the new lock assembly (PN 5265554) and the new lock assembly cover (PN 5265559).
2. Adjust the striker until proper closing effort is achieved and the glove box door is flush with the ash receiver.
3. If high closing effort cannot be eliminated then the existing glove box module will need to be replaced.
4. Adjust the light switch by bending down on the light so that the switch plunger makes adequate contact with the glove box door to turn the light off.
POLICY: Reimbursable within the provisions of the warranty.
