15 Distributor SYNC Pickup & Defective SMEC


Perform No Start Test 9 before proceeding.

1. Turn ignition Off, then disconnect gray distributor sync connector.
2. Inspect both halves of connector for terminal damage.
3. If terminals are damaged, repair as necessary and perform Test 16.
4. If terminals are satisfactory, press Volt/Ohm button on diagnostic read-out tool to enter into voltmeter mode.
5. Touch voltmeter probe to black/light blue wire of engine harness distributor connector.
6. If ohmmeter shows no continuity, repair open in black/light blue wire and perform Test 16.
7. If ohmmeter shows continuity, turn ignition switch On.
8. Connect a voltmeter between black/light blue wire and the orange wire of sync connector.
9. If voltmeter shows no voltage, repair open in orange wire and perform Test 16.
10. If voltmeter shoes any voltage, remove voltmeter lead from orange wire of sync connector, then connect it to tan/yellow wire of sync connector.
11. If voltage is at least 7 volts, replace the distributor sync pickup and perform Test 16.
12. If voltage is not at least 7 volts, turn ignition Off, then disconnect 60-way connector from SMEC and inspect the terminals.
13. If terminals are damaged, repair as necessary and perform Test 16.
14. If terminals are satisfactory, remove voltmeter from distributor sync connector, then connect an ohmmeter between tan/yellow wire at sync connector and to terminal No. 26 of 60-way connector.
15. If ohmmeter shows continuity, replace the SMEC and perform Test 16.
16. If ohmmeter shows no continuity, repair open in tan/yellow wire, then perform Test 16.
