11 Distributor Pickup & Connecting Circuits
Perform No Start Test 9 before proceeding.
1. Turn ignition switch Off, then disconnect black distributor connector.
2. Inspect both halves of connector for terminal damage.
3. If terminals are damaged, repair as necessary, then perform Test 16.
4. If terminals are satisfactory, erase fault messages on diagnostic read-out tool.
5. Connect a jumper wire between gray/black wire and black/light blue wire at distributor engine harness connector.
6. Select ``Read Fault Data'' test on diagnostic read-out tool, then while engine is cranked, make and break jumper wire connection.
7. If ``Ign Reference Signal'' is not displayed on read-out, proceed as follows:
a. Ensure ignition switch is in Run position, then press Volt/Ohm button to enter into voltmeter mode.
b. Touch voltmeter probe to orange wire at distributor harness connector.
c. If voltage is at least 7 volts, replace distributor pickup and perform Test 16.
d. If voltage is not at least 7 volts, repair open in orange wire of distributor harness connector and perform Test 16.
8. If ``Ign Reference Signal'' is displayed on read-out, ensure ignition switch is in Run position, then remove jumper wire and press Volt/Ohm button to enter into voltmeter mode.
9. Touch voltmeter probe to gray/black wire at distributor connector.
10. If voltage is at least 4 volts, proceed as follows:
a. Press Volt/Ohm button on diagnostic read-out tool to enter into ohmmeter mode.
b. Turn ignition switch Off, then touch ohmmeter probe to black/light blue wire at distributor.
c. If ohmmeter shows continuity, replace the SMEC and perform Test 16.
d. If ohmmeter shows no continuity, repair open in black/light blue wire from distributor connector to main harness, then proceed to Test 16.
11. If voltage is not at least 4 volts, turn ignition switch Off and disconnect 60-way connector at SMEC.
12. Inspect connector terminals for damage. If terminals are damaged, repair as necessary, then proceed to Test 16.
13. If terminals are satisfactory, connect an ohmmeter between terminal No. 47 of 60-way connector and terminal No. 3 of distributor pickup connector.
14. If ohmmeter shows continuity, replace the SMEC and perform Test 16.
15. If ohmmeter shows no continuity, repair open in gray/black wire between distributor and 60-way connector, then perform Test 16.
