10 Shorted MAP Defective SMEC & Defective DIST. Pickup

Perform No Start Test 9 before proceeding.

1. Turn ignition switch Off, then disconnect throttle position sensor (TPS).
2. Inspect both halves of both connectors for terminal damage.
3. If terminals are damaged, repair as necessary, then proceed to Test 16.
4. If terminals are satisfactory, turn ignition switch On, then press Volt/Ohm button on diagnostic read-out tool to enter voltmeter mode.
5. Touch voltmeter probe to violet/white wire at TPS connector.
6. If voltage is at least 4.5 volts, proceed as follows:
a. Turn ignition switch Off and disconnect 60-way SMEC connector.
b. Inspect terminals for damage. If terminals are damaged, repair as necessary, then proceed to Test 16.
c. If terminals are satisfactory, press Volt/Ohm button on diagnostic read-out tool to enter into ohmmeter mode.
d. Touch ohmmeter probe to terminal Nos. 15 and 16 of 60-way connector and observe ohm readings at each terminal.
e. If ohmmeter shows less than .5 ohms at both terminals, replace the SMEC, then proceed to Test 16.
f. If ohmmeter shows open circuits, repair open in light blue/red wire, replace SMEC, then proceed to Test 16.
g. If ohmmeter shows more than .5 ohms but not an open circuit, repair high resistance to ground in light blue/red wire, then proceed to Test 16.
7. If voltage is not at least 4.5 volts, disconnect MAP sensor wire connector and check voltage again.
8. If voltage is at least 4.5 volts, replace MAP sensor and perform Test 16.
9. If voltage is still not at least 4.5 volts, turn ignition switch Off and disconnect 60-way SMEC connector.
10. Inspect connector terminals for damage. If terminals are damaged, repair as necessary, then proceed to Test 16.
11. If terminals are satisfactory, turn ignition switch On, then press Volt/Ohm button on diagnostic read-out tool to enter into voltmeter mode.
12. Touch ohmmeter probe terminal No. 52 of 60-way connector.
13. If voltage is at least 8 volts, replace the SMEC and perform Test 16.
14. If voltage is not at least 8 volts, then disconnect distributor black pickup connector.
15. Inspect both halves of connector for terminal damage. If terminals are damaged, repair as necessary and perform Test 16.
16. If terminals are satisfactory, touch voltmeter probe terminal No. 52 of 60-way connector.
17. If voltage is at least 8 volts, replace distributor pickup and perform Test 16.
18. If voltage is not at least 8 volts, turn ignition switch Off.
19. Connect ohmmeter between terminal No. 52 of 60-way connector and orange wire at distributor connector.
20. If ohmmeter shows no continuity, repair open in orange wire of 60-way connector, then perform Test 16.
21. If ohmmeter shows continuity, disconnect 14-way connector at SMEC.
22. Inspect terminals for damage. If terminals are damaged, replace as necessary, then proceed to Test 16.
23. If terminals are satisfactory, connect ohmmeter between terminal No. 1 of 14-way connector and orange wire at distributor connector.
24. If ohmmeter shows no continuity, repair open in orange wire of 14-way connector, then perform Test 16.
25. If ohmmeter shoes continuity, turn ignition switch On, then press Volt/Ohm button on diagnostic read-out tool to enter into voltmeter mode.
26. Touch voltmeter probe to dark blue wire in terminal No. 4 of 14-way connector.
27. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open in dark blue wire, then perform Test 16.
28. If voltage is at least 10 volts, turn ignition switch Off, then press Volt/Ohm button on diagnostic read-out tool to return to ohmmeter mode.
29. Check continuity to ground at terminal Nos. 6 and 7 of 14-way connector.
30. If ohmmeter shows less than .5 ohms at both terminals, replace the SMEC and perform Test 16.
31. If ohmmeter shows open circuits, repair open in black wire of terminal Nos. 6 and 7, then perform Test 16.
32. If ohmmeter shows more than .5 ohms, but not an open circuit, repair high resistance to ground in black wire of terminal Nos. 6 and 7, then perform Test 16.
