1 Ignition Spark/Fuel Faults & Fault Message

Perform Visual Inspection before proceeding.

1. Ensure battery is fully charged, then try to start engine.
2. If engine starts but is hard to start or stalls, proceed as follows:
a. Connect diagnostic read-out tool and enter into ``Read Fault Data'' test. If message is ``Inj 1 Control Ckt'' or ``Inj 2 Control Ckt,'' proceed to Test 8.
b. If message is ``Inj 1 Peak Current'' or ``Inj 2 Peak Current,'' proceed to Test 7.
c. If any other message is displayed, proceed to ``Driveability Tests,'' Test 1.
3. If engine does not start, turn ignition Off.
4. Remove a spark plug cable, then test cable for resistance.
5. Replace defective spark plug cable if necessary, then reconnect spark plug cable to distributor cap.
6. Insert insulated screwdriver in cable terminal, then hold screwdriver within 1/4 inch of a good ground while an assistant cranks engine for at least 7 seconds.
7. If spark is satisfactory, proceed to Test 2.
8. If there is no spark, disconnect ignition coil wire at distributor, then hold ignition coil wire within 1/4 inch of a good ground while an assistant cranks engine for at least 7 seconds.
9. If spark is satisfactory, replace distributor cap and/or rotor.
10. If there is no spark, remove ignition coil wire and test for resistance.
11. Replace faulty coil wire if necessary, then retest ignition coil.
12. If coil wire is satisfactory, connect a voltmeter between positive side of coil and ground.
13. While watching voltmeter, have an assistant crank engine. If voltage is below 10 volts during cranking, proceed to Test 9.
14. If voltage is above 10 volts during cranking, connect diagnostic read-out tool and enter into ``Read Fault Data'' test. If message is ``Ignition Control Ckt,'' proceed to Test 6. If not, proceed to Test 5.
