General System Description

Fig. 2 Fuel injection system schematic. 1988 models:

1988
The electronic, single point fuel injection system, Fig. 2, used in 1988 models uses a pre-programmed Single Module Engine Controller (SMEC) that regulates ignition timing, air/fuel ratio, emission control devices, cooling fan, charging system and idle speed. The SMEC has the capability to update and revise its programming to meet changing operating conditions.

The SMEC receives inputs from various sensors, switches and relays. All inputs to the SMEC are converted into signals. These signals cause change to either fuel flow at injector or ignition timing or both.

If a fault is found in a major system, this information is stored in the SMEC memory. Information on this fault can be displayed by a instrument panel check engine lamp or by connecting a suitable diagnostic read out tool and reading a numbered display code which directly relates to a general fault.
