SYMPTOM/CONDITION

Delayed initial engagement into drive or reverse, primarily on vehicles equipped with air-to-oil transaxle coolers generally fall into one of the following categories.

1. An unacceptable delay of five (5) or more seconds occurs, before engagement is felt, when the transaxle is shifted into drive or reverse, generally after the vehicle has been parked for an hour or more.

NOTE: PRESENCE OF METALLIC DEBRIS IN PAN OR FILTER INDICATES AN INTERNAL TRANSAXLE FAILURE, REQUIRING TRANSAXLE REMOVAL AND REPAIR.

2. When the accelerator is depressed following a shift into drive or reverse, the engine races before engagement occurs, and the engagement is unusually harsh.

3. When the transaxle is shifted into drive or reverse, and the vehicle begins to move, the acceleration is poor initially and the impression of slipping is felt.

DIAGNOSIS

^ Check the automatic transmission fluid level and condition, if the fluid level is extremely low, this is the probable cause of the complaint. Correction of the fluid level should correct the condition.

^ Check and, if necessary, adjust throttle cable and shift cable.

^ Connect hydraulic pressure gauges and check front pump pressure.
Because this condition may not occur consistently, verification of the complaint is difficult. However, if the complaint fits the symptoms noted above, proceed with the repair procedure.

PARTS REQUIRED*

1 Separator Plate (All Standard 2.2L, 2.5L, & 2.6L) PN 4377121
1 Separator Plate (All 2.2L Turbo and 3.0L V6) PN 4412412

FIGURE 1:

*Two different separator plates are used for different engine applications and are identified by the numbers "1" and "2" as shown in Figure 1. During the repair, a plate numbered "1" is replaced by one numbered "1", and one numbered "2" replaced by one numbered "2". The number "1" or "2" in the plate is the last digit of the part number.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

The repair consists of replacing the existing valve body separator plate with a new plate from which one orifice has been eliminated (Figure 1). During the change, it is extremely important that all valve body check balls remain in their correct locations.

1. Remove valve body from vehicle using appropriate service manual procedure.

2. Remove valve body screws and carefully separate valve body filter and housing. Carefully set valve body housing aside, keeping the eight check balls in their correct locations.

3. Remove the four transfer plate screws and separate the separator plate from the transfer plate. Note identification of separator plate ("1" or "2") Figure 1.

4. Select replacement separator plate with matching identification number. Verify that orifice has been eliminated in replacement plate.

5. Assemble valve body and filter and install in transaxle. Refill transaxle with Mopar Plus Automatic Transmission Fluid Type 7176 and verify proper operation.
POLICY: Reimbursable within the provisions of the warranty
