Front Seat Belt - Diagnostic Procedures

The following inspection procedure and flow chart has been developed to assist in the diagnosis of suspected defective seat belt tension relievers. This procedure is applicable to all passenger cars and trucks with a seat belt tension reliever. Refer to chart on page 4, for list of vehicles equipped with a tension reliever.

DIAGNOSIS/INSPECTION PROCEDURE

A. Inspect Tension Reliever Mechanism (TR)

- Sit in the front seat and close the adjacent door.

- Buckle up the seat belt system and pull the webbing slack out of the lap belt portion of the belt system.

- Pull at least 12" of the belt off the shoulder and let it fully retract.

- Extract 2" of webbing and release.

NOTE: THE WEBBING SHOULD NOT RETRACT.

B. Inspect Tension Reliever Release (TRR)

- Set the tension reliever mechanism as described in part "A."

- Extract at least 12" of the webbing and release.

- The webbing should fully retract.

C. Inspect Tension Reliever Door Release Mechanism

- Set the tension reliever mechanism as described in part "A."

- Open the adjacent door.

- The webbing should fully retract.

D. Inspect Tension Reliever, Hand Depression of Plunger or Lever

NOTE: ANOTHER PERSON MAY BE REQUIRED TO ASSIST.

- With the door opened, fully depress the tension reliever button (plunger or lever).

- Inspect the tension reliever as described in Section "A."

E. Check Door Gap - (Applies Only to Button Application)

- Form a rectangular box from dum dum (approximately 10 x 10 x 25 MM).

NOTE: PRECISION IS NOT NECESSARY.

- Place the dum dum piece on the sheet metal shut face (next to the tension reliever button) with the long end pointed outward.

- Close the door with enough force to latch it (do not overslam).

- Open the door and remove the depressed dum dum.

- Measure the compressed thickness of the dum dum. This is the door gap.

NOTE: A GAP OF 19 MM OR LESS IS REQUIRED FOR THE TENSION RELIEVER TO SET.
