Steering Column Turn Signal/Hazard Warning Switch
(REFER TO APPROPRIATE DIAGRAMS ON PAGES 18 AND 19).
WARNING: BEFORE BEGINNING ANY AIRBAG SYSTEM INSTALLATION OR REMOVAL PROCEDURES, REMOVE AND ISOLATE THE NEGATIVE (-) BATTERY, CABLE (GROUND) FROM THE VEHICLE BATTERY.
Removal
1. Disconnect battery ground cable and isolate.
2. Remove airbag module as previously discussed.
3. Remove steering wheel as previously discussed.
4. Remove the clockspring assembly mounting screws so that the clockspring assembly can be positioned, out of the way, to gain access to the column subcomponents. Do not remove.
5. If equipped, remove sound deadening insulation panel below the steering column.
6. Remove lower instrument panel bezel.
7. Remove wiring trough by prying out plastic retainer buttons.
8. Position gearshift lever to its full clockwise position (standard column). If equipped with tilt column, position shifter at midpoint.
9. Disconnect turn signal wiring.
10. Standard Column - Remove screw holding wiper/washer switch to turn signal switch pivot. Leave the entire turn signal lever (control stalk) in its installed position. Remove three screws attaching turn signal switch to upper bearing housing.
Tilt Column - Remove plastic cover (if equipped) from lock plate. Depress lock plate with tool C-4156 and pry retaining ring out of groove with screwdriver. The full load of the upper bearing spring should not be relieved; if it is, the retaining ring will turn too easily making removal more difficult. Remove the lock plate, cancelling cam, and upper bearing spring. Place turn signal switch in right turn position, remove screw which attaches link between turn signal switch and wiper/washer switch pivot. Remove screw which attaches hazard warning switch knob. Remove three screws attaching turn signal switch to steering column.
11. Tape wiring harness connector to wiring harness.
12. Remove turn signal and hazard warning switch assembly by gently pulling switch up from column while straightening and guiding wires up through column opening.
Installation
1. On standard columns, lubricate turn signal switch pivot (entire 360~ around depth of column hole through which it installs). Use a light film of Lubriplate or equivalent.
2. Tape wiring harness connector to wiring harness, then maneuver connector through opening in steering column, then carefully guide wires down through column.
3. Standard Column - Position turn signal switch into place on upper bearing housing. Install three mounting screws and tighten securely. Position turn signal lever (control stalk) to turn signal switch pivot, then put screw through pivot and tighten securely. Be sure that dimmer switch rod is in control stalk pocket.
Tilt Column - Position turn signal switch in upper column housing. Place switch in right turn position. Install three mounting screws and tighten. Pull link into position between turn signal switch and wiper/ washer switch pivot, and secure with screw. Using Tool C-4156, install upper bearing spring, cancelling cam, and lock plate using new retaining spring. Install hazard warning knob with screw.
4. Connect wiring harness connector. Install wiring trough to column with 4 plastic buttons.
5. Install clockspring as outlined earlier.
6. Install steering wheel.
7. Install airbag module.
8. Connect DRB II to ASDM diagnostic connector. (Located at right side of console on G/J-body and at right kick panel on M-Body.)
9. From PASSENGER side of vehicle, turn the ignition key to "ON" position. Exit vehicle with DRB II.
10. After checking that no one is inside the vehicle, reconnect the negative battery terminal.
11. Using the DRB II, read and record any fault data including stored faults.
12. Refer to the Diagnostic Test Manual if any faults found in previous steps.
13. Erase fault codes using DRB II.
NOTE: IF PROBLEMS REMAIN, FAULT CODES WILL NOT ERASE.
14. From the PASSENGER side of vehicle, turn the ignition key to "OFF", then "ON", and observe the instrument cluster airbag light. The light should go on for 6 to 8 seconds, then go out. The system is functioning normal.
NOTICE: IF AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT EITHER FAILS TO LIGHT, OR GOES ON AND STAYS ON; THERE IS A SYSTEM MALFUNCTION. YOU MUST REFER TO
THE DIAGNOSTIC TEST MANUAL AND USE THE DRB II TO PROPERLY DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM.
