Shaft Seal

REMOVAL OR REPLACEMENT

1. Discharge refrigerant from system, then remove clutch as described under "Compressor Clutch, Replace."
2. Remove seal seat retaining snap ring, then the seal seat using suitable tool.
3. Using suitable tool, insert tool against seal, then push down and turn the tool until it engages the slots on the seal cage.

4. Remove seal assembly.

INSTALLATION

Ensure compressor neck and shaft area is free of lint, dirt or other foreign material prior to installing new seal parts.
1. Install seal sleeve protector on compressor shaft.
2. Lubricate seal with refrigerant oil, taking care not to touch lapped face.

3. Engage slots of seal removal tool to new seal cage. Place seal over compressor shaft and push seal into compressor seal cavity, then twist tool in opposite direction to disengage and remove.
4. Coat seal retainer with refrigerant oil, then using suitable seal seat tool, install retainer against seal.
5. Install snap ring into groove with beveled edge facing away from compressor. Ensure snap ring is fully seated.
6. Install shims, shaft key and clutch assembly as outlined under "Clutch Assembly, Replace."
7. Check refrigerant oil level and add if necessary.
8. Evacuate and recharge system.
