The front passive restraint system uses two types of sensing devices to lock the belt. An inertia sensor (as in the normal unibelt system), and a webbing extraction rate sensor. Therefore, unlike the unibelt system, a hard pull on the shoulder belt or lap belt will lock the retractors. If the retractors are extended slowly, the belt will not lock. Refer to the service manual for additional general information regarding seat belts.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
Front Inner Seat Belt Retractors - Removal
1. Disconnect battery.
2. Remove three (3) rear console screws and lift console.

3. Loosen retractor carpet cover(s) by carefully prying the seat belt bezel(s) from the carpet cover(s) (Figure 2).
4. Feed bezel(s) through belt exit hole in carpet cover.
5. Disconnect retractor wiring if applicable.
6. Remove retractor mounting bolt(s) (Figure 2).
Front Inner Seat Belt Retractors - Installation
1. Position retractor on bracket assembly (Figure 2).
2. Install bolt and torque to 40 N-m (350 in.lbs.).
3. Feed bezel(s) through hole in carpet cover.
4. Reposition carpet cover and snap bezel(s) in belt exit hole of carpet cover.
5. Connect retractor wiring if applicable.
6. Lower console, taking care to position retractor carpet cover edges on inside of console carpet sides.
7. Reconnect battery.

Front Outer Shoulder Belt Buckle (Door Mounted) - Removal
1. Remove plug from buckle boot (Figure 3).
2. Remove bolt through hole in boot.
3. Slide buckle off mounting tab.
Front Outer Shoulder Belt Buckle (Door Mounted) - Installation
1. Install buckle on to door mounting tab.
CAUTION: DOOR MOUNTING TAB MUST BE INSERTED BETWEEN BUCKLE FLANGES (FIGURE 3).
2. Install bolt and torque to 8 N-m (70 in.lbs.).
3. Insert the shoulder belt tip to insure that a "click" is heard, indicating proper tip engagement with buckle.
4. Install plug.

Front Outer Lap Belt Buckle - Removal and Installation
1. Remove buckle mounting bolt and disconnect wiring, left side only (Figure 4).
2. Install buckle mounting bolt and torque to 40 N-m (350 in.lbs.) and reconnect wiring, left side only.
