Wiper and Washer Systems: Description and Operation

A two speed wiper system is standard on all 1985-87 models. An optional two speed intermittent system with a variable delay is also available.

Windshield wiper operation is controlled by a dash or column mounted switch. Wiper motors have permanent magnet fields. High and low speeds are determined by current flow to the appropriate set of brushes. Delay operation on intermittent systems is controlled by a variable resistor in the wiper switch, a dwell switch in the wiper motor and a control unit/relay assembly.

Wiper arms on both systems return to a park position when the system is switched "OFF" with ignition "ON." Depending on application, wipers either park on the glass at their lowest point of travel or "depress park" in a concealed position. Standard two speed systems complete the wipe cycle and stop in park position. Intermittent systems complete a full wipe cycle before parking.

To park wipers in the concealed position, motor direction is reversed when wipers reach their lowest point of travel. A parking cam assembly rotates 180°, changing the length of the motor output arm and parks wipers in the concealed position. Normal operation returns the output arm/parking cam assembly to the run position.
