SYMPTOM/CONDITION
Hard shifting into and out of 5th gear. "Scratchy" 5th gear shifts.
DIAGNOSIS
Road test the vehicle and check 5th gear shift effort for being too high or "scratchy" feeling when shifting slowly out of 5th gear.
PARTS REQUIRED
1 Strut Retainer Plate PN 4431894
REPAIR PROCEDURE
If one or both of the above conditions exist, then it will be necessary to replace the 5th gear synchronizer strut retainer plate.
1. Remove the left front wheel.
2. Remove transaxle oil fill plug.
3. Remove transaxle end cover.
4. Remove 5-speed synchronizer ring.

5. Remove strut retainer (Figure 1).

6. Check the location of the 5th synchronizer spring. The spring should be positioned in the synchronizer hub as shown in Figure 2. Reposition the spring if it is out of location.
7. Install the new strut retainer plate, PN 4431894, with the three raised portions equally spaced between the struts.
8. Install a new snap ring.
9. Install end cover. Torque end cover bolts to 17-21 foot pounds.
10. Fill the transaxle with "Dexron" type 7176 automatic transmission fluid to the recommended level.
11. Road test the vehicle and check for proper transaxle operation.
