1986 MODEL YEAR RUNNING CHANGES - FWD
END COVER
Two of the end cover bolts were moved inboard approximately 4 mm and the end cover contour revised. The reason for this change is to make way for a 1987 model year change that removes material from the outside contour of the case at the end cover flange to provide adequate clearance between the case and new larger diameter axle shafts. The case and cover can be used to service prior model year units.

BEEFED UP CLUTCHES
A four-disc front clutch assembly will be introduced for the 1987 model year for higher torque engines. In order to prepare for this, a new front clutch piston, front clutch retainer, front clutch reaction plate, and rear clutch retainer were introduced. These parts can be used to service prior model years only if all four parts are- used as a group. Below is a description of the changes to each part.
FRONT CLUTCH RETAINER - Inside and outside front contour and snap ring groove moved forward.
FRONT CLUTCH PISTON - Front face, flange, and seal groove moved forward.
REACTION PLATE - 0.5 mm thinner.
REAR CLUTCH RETAINER - Hub 2.2 mm longer and four rows of lube holes instead of three rows.

2.2 LITRE CASE
The engine starter mounting has been revised. The new case has one threaded and two drilled holes instead of three threaded holes for starter mounting. A casting revision was required in the starter pocket area. New case is not interchangeable with prior years.

INNER PUMP GEAR
The torque converter drive hub was redesigned to have two flats instead of two slots. The new pump gear has flats instead of two lugs and is not interchangeable with prior year parts. A new oil pump assembly incorporating the new gear is required for service.

INPUT SHAFT AND REACTION SHAFT STRUCTURE CHANGE
The input shaft, reaction shaft, and reaction shaft support have been redesigned. Following is a description of the parts that changed:
REACTION SHAFT SUPPORT - Bushing now located in the support instead of in the shaft.
REACTION SHAFT - Seal ring bore size increased and the bushing moved to the support.
BUSHING - Larger outside diameter', shorter length, and larger diameter finished bore.
SUPPORT ASSEMBLY - New assembly incorporating the above changes is not interchangeable with previous models.

A new transmission, P/N 4329608, was introduced for use with the new 3.9 Litre V-6 engine in the new mid-size Dakota pickup truck. Shift package same as used with 225 cu.in. part throttle unlock unit.
