This bulletin supplements the information contained in Technical Service Bulletin # 14-63-84 Dated 11/13/84, which follows this TSB.

The original bulletin was issued to authorize the use of Mopar fuel injector cleaner, as a warranty repair, for 1984 and 1985 vehicles with the 2.2L turbocharged engine.

Since that time, the availability of high-detergent fuels and fuel injector design changes have eliminated the need for fuel injector cleaner in turbocharged vehicles.

Because of these changes, the use of fuel injection cleaner for warranty repairs is no longer authorized.

NOTE: SINGLE POINT TBI SYSTEMS USE A DIFFERENT STYLE FUEL INJECTOR THAT DOES NOT EXHIBIT PLUGGING. THE USE OF FUEL INJECTION CLEANER WILL HAVE NO EFFECT ON ITS PERFORMANCE.

SYMPTOM/CONDITION

Hard starting, rough idle, lack of power, sags, and hesitations.

This condition may be caused by a build up of deposits on the pintle valve of the injector causing a blockage of the fuel metering orifice and, consequently, in less fuel being supplied to the engine.

These deposits are the result of fuels blended with questionable quality and insufficient effective detergents.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

For vehicles exhibiting any one or more of these symptoms the following procedure should be performed:

1. Make sure all the engine control systems are operating correctly by using the appropriate Driveability Test Procedure.

2. If all engine control systems are operating according to specification, add one bottle of Mopar Fuel Injector Cleaner, PN 4318007, to a full tank of gas.

CAUTION: UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCE SHOULD THIS FUEL INJECTOR CLEANER BE ADDED TO A PARTIALLY FILLED FUEL TANK.

3. Drive the vehicle 5 to 10 miles to circulate the injector cleaner into the fuel supply system. A driveability improvement should be noted at this time. As more mileage is accumulated the injectors will clean up.

Mopar fuel injector cleaner is designed to remove deposits that have built up in the injector over a period of time. However, it is not intended for continuous use. Owners should be advised of what is causing their driveability problem and a recommendation should be made to try other brands of gasolines.
Parts Availability

Due to initial limited availability of Mopar fuel injector cleaner, it may be necessary to order on a Special Handling basis. Minimum order requirement is one (1) case (12 bottles).
