Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes
The logic module or SMEC is programmed to monitor various circuits in the EFI system. If a problem is sensed often enough to indicate an actual fault, its fault code is stored in the logic module or SMEC for display. If the problem ceases to exist or is repaired, the fault code will be cancelled by the logic module after 30 ignition key on/off cycles or cancelled by the SMEC after 50-100 ignition key on/off cycles. The memory can also be cleared by disconnecting the battery (+) terminal (using the quick disconnect), however this may temporarily affect driveability until the logic module re-calibrates its adaptive memory.
The advantage of this system is shorter diagnostic time in determining where the problem is.
