This procedure has been developed to aid in the diagnosis and repair of the following:
^ Failed state emission inspection and/or
^ Black smoke from tailpipe
These conditions will likely cause fault code 52 to be locked in memory.
DIAGNOSTIC/REPAIR PROCEDURE
This procedure should be followed for the above listed conditions before utilizing the Driveability Diagnostic Procedure book.
1. Make sure all accessories are in the "off" position.
2. Install the Diagnostic Readout Box (Miller Tool C-4805).
3. Allow the vehicle to idle at normal operating temperature.
4. Observe the 02 sensor signal on the Diagnostic Readout Box. If the signal stays on 1 (does not switch) for a period of 3 minutes, replace the injector, following the service manual procedure.
NOTE: WHEN REPLACING THE INJECTOR, ALWAYS USE NEW ORINGS, CLEAN THE THROTTLE BODY WITH CARBURETOR CLEANER, AND USE WHITE PETROLEUM JELLY TO LUBRICATE THE O-RINGS. FAILURE TO DO THIS MAY RESULT IN FUEL LEAKING PAST THE O-RINGS.
5. With the ignition switch in the "on" position, press the ATM button on the Diagnostic Readout Box. If any fuel leakage is evident at the bottom portion of the injector, the lower O-ring is improperly installed.
6. Clear the diagnostic codes by disconnecting the positive battery cable for about 10 seconds.
7. Restart the car and let engine run until cooling fan cycles once, and raise engine speed to 2000 rpm for 30 seconds.
8. Return to idle, then Read the Diagnostic Readout Box. If the 02 sensor signal is switching (0-1), the problem has been corrected.
9. If switching does not occur, refer to the first step in the Driveability Diagnostic Procedure book.
