SYMPTOM/CONDITION
Scratches, fogging, chips, nicks, distortion, or other related defects in the Motorola instrument cluster lens.
PARTS REQUIRED
1 Lens Package PN 4439001
There are two types of fasteners used to retain the cluster lens to the housing. Some of the earlier produced clusters will have the lens retained by "Push Pins", and the later produced clusters will have the lens retained by screws. The lens replacement package will contain the required parts to replace the "Push Pins" with screws.
FIGURE 1:
Lens replacement must be done with the instrument cluster removed from the vehicle (Figure 1)..
NOTE: THE LENSES WILL BE SHIPPED WITH A PROTECTIVE COATING ON THEM. LEAVE THIS COATING ON THE OUTSIDE UNTIL THE INSTALLATION OF THE LENS IS COMPLETE. THIS WILL HELP TO PROTECT THE LENS FROM SCRATCHES AND SMUDGES DURING THE INSTALLATION. DO NOT TOUCH THE BLACK MASK AREA OR THE VACUUM FLUORESCENT TUBE ASSEMBLING.
FIGURE 2REPLACING THE LENS OF A CLUSTER WITH SCREW TYPE RETAINER:
SCREW-TYPE LENS ATTACHMENT
1. Remove the instrument cluster from the vehicle in accordance with the appropriate service manual procedures.
2. Remove the defective lens with a No. 15 Torx bit. REMOVE ONLY THE SCREWS SHOWN IN FIGURE 2.
3. Replace the lens and reattach it with the original four Torx screws.
4. Reinstall the cluster in accordance with the service manual procedures, and remove the protective coating. If necessary, the new lens may be cleaned WITH A SOFT DAMP CLOTH ONLY. Care should be taken NOT to exert excessive force while wiping the lens.
FIGURE 3REMOVING THE MASK ASSEMBLY FROM A CLUSTER UTILIZING THE PUSH PIN TYPE RETAINER:
PUSH PINS - LENS ATTACHMENT
1. Remove the instrument cluster from the vehicle in accordance with the service manual procedures.
2. Remove the defective lens assembly from the cluster (Figure 3).
3. Use the nuts and bolts included in the service package to reinstall the replacement lens to the cluster assembly. Insert each nut into the back side of the mask where the "Push Pins" were removed (they should fit snugly). Insert the screws with the washers from the front side of the lens assembly. The four "Push Pins" are no longer needed, and should be discarded.
4. Replace the mask assembly using the original hardware.
5. Reinstall the cluster in accordance with the service manual procedures, and remove the protective coating. If necessary, the new lens may be cleaned WITH A SOFT DAMP CLOTH ONLY. Care should be taken NOT to exert excessive force while wiping the lens.
