Compressor Clutch

REMOVAL OR REPLACEMENT

Fig. 1 Clutch assembly exploded view:

1. Remove drive belt from pulley. Disconnect field coil wiring.
2. Remove mounting bolts and reposition compressor as needed to gain access to clutch. Compressor need not be completely removed, and the system does not have to be discharged, to remove clutch assembly.
3. Use a suitable spanner wrench to hold clutch hub plate and remove shaft nut and lock washer.
4. Install front plate puller C-4771 or equivalent and remove front plate, key and shims.
5. Remove pulley retaining snap ring and slide pulley off compressor.
6. Remove field coil retaining snap ring, ground strap retaining screw and wire clip, then slide field coil from compressor.

INSTALLATION

1. Align hole in back of field coil with pin on compressor housing and position coil into place, ensuring field coil wires are properly routed. Install field coil wire retaining clip, screw and the field coil retaining snap ring, bevel side outward.
2. Install pulley assembly onto compressor, then install snap ring, bevel side outward.
3. Install shims and shaft key in place.
4. Install front plate assembly onto compressor shaft.
5. With front plate fully seated, check air gap between pulley and front plate assembly. Air gap should be 0.020 - 0.035 inch. If not, change shims to correct air gap.
6. Install lockwasher and nut. Torque nut to 155 in. lbs. Recheck air gap and adjust if necessary.
7. Remount compressor and adjust belt tension to specifications. Operate compressor, cycling clutch on and off at 5 second intervals for 20 cycles, to burnish clutch friction surfaces.
