SYMPTOM/CONDITION
Below is the procedure for replacing head restraint guides.
FIGURE 1:
REPAIR PROCEDURE
There are three different types of seatback covers as shown in Figure 1.
There are two different designs of head restraint guides; one has a closed bottom retaining lip and the other is open. To determine the difference, remove head restraint and insert a screw driver with at least a 4" shank into guide.
If screw driver bottoms in guide approximately 3" down, it is the closed bottom retaining lip design. To remove this design requires breaking out the bottom of the guide with a screw driver and mallet. Then use pliers, vice grips, etc. to grasp head of the guide and, with twisting motion, pull up to remove guide. Discard the old guide.
If, when inserting the screw driver into the guide, it goes in all the way, proceed as follows for removal.
1. Remove head restraint.
2. Move seatback forward.

Remove hog rings attached to the bottom of seatback (Figure 2).
B. Panel Type Seatbacks

Remove all caps from tapping screws, then all tapping screws from seatback (Figure 3).

Raise seatback cover to an extent that hog rings on upper part of seatback become visible (Figure 4).
CAUTION: SEATBACK COVER MUST BE RAISED BY FIRST PRESSING DOWN URETHANE CUSHION OF SEATBACK IN ORDER NOT TO DAMAGE SEATBACK COVER.

B. Zipper Type Seatback
Release zipper on seatback cover and raise seatback cover (Figure 5).

c. Panel Type Seatback
Slide seatback panel down, unhook catches, and remove panel (Figure 6).

5. Lift lower tip of head restraint guide with pliers inserted from the back side of seatback (Figure 7).
NOTE: USE LONG NOSED PLIERS AND GRASP GUIDE TIP ABOUT 3 mm (1/8") FROM BRACKET.
CAUTION: WEAR GLOVES TO PREVENT INJURY CAUSED BY SHARP EDGES OF SEAT.

6. While holding guide with pliers, tap plier handle with a hammer to remove lower tip of guide from bracket (Figure 8).

7. Remove guide by pulling up with twisting motion from the top side with pliers (Figure 9).

8. To install head restraint guide, insert guide until rib snaps into bracket (Figure 10). Light tapping may be required.
9. Place seatback cover or panel on seatback in reverse sequence of its removal.
CAUTION: URETHANE CUSHION MUST BE PRESSED DOWN WHEN SEATBACK COVER IS PLACED IN POSITION TO INSURE COVER IS NOT DAMAGED.
