SYMPTOM/CONDITION

A condition may exist on subject model vehicles where the fuel tank cannot be fully filled or is very difficult to fill. The fuel gauge on these subject vehicles will normally stop one graduation bar below the full bar.

This condition may be caused by a fuel filler vent tube which is too long, and prevents sufficient venting on fuel filling. This vent tube will require modification as outlined below.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Position vehicle on hoist.

2. Disconnect negative battery cable.

3. Remove fuel filler cap.

4. Remove screws that secure fuel filler to quarter panel.

5. Raise vehicle.

6. Remove draft tube rubber cap from tank sending unit and connect either a portable holding tank or a siphon hose to draft tube. Drain fuel tank dry into holding tank or properly identified "gasoline" safety container.

7. Loosen the fuel tank straps and lower tank slightly, using a transmission jack to support tank.

8. Remove left rear wheel and tire.

9. Remove fuel filler tube from tank.

10. Measure the blue fuel filler vent tube (Figure 1). If tube is longer than one inch, cut off any excess tube material.
11. Carefully reinstall fuel filler tube into tank.

12. Tighten strap nuts to 23 N.m (250 inch pounds), and remove transmission jack. Make sure straps are not twisted or bent before tightening the strap nuts.

13. Reinstall draft tube cap.

14. Reinstall left rear wheel and tire.

15. Lower vehicle and reinstall fuel filler tube mounting screws.

16. Fill fuel tank and verify fuel fill indicator on instrument cluster.
