Some 1985 2.2L engines will be built with larger cylinder head bolts. The new head bolt is an 11 mm bolt vs 10 mm. The 11 mm bolt can be identified by the "11" on the bolt head. The new bolt is scheduled into production as follows:

Trenton Engine Plant 7-1-85
Saltillo Engine Plant 6-17-85

Do not intermix the 10 and 11 mm head bolts or cracking of the block and/or thread stripping may result.

All current and prior model year cylinder heads will accept either the 10 mm or 11 mm head bolts.

All 1986 2.2L engines will be built with the 11 mm head bolt.

The part number for the 11 mm bolt is 6501433, and PN 6501435 washer is also required.

The torque specification and procedure for the 11 mm head bolts are:

Tighten the cylinder head bolts in the sequence shown in Figure 1, using the 4-step "torque turn" method. Tighten according to the following values:
First All 61 N-m (45 foot pounds)
Second All to 88 N-m (65 foot pounds)
Third All to 88 N-m (65 foot pounds)
Fourth All to + 1/4 turn
