SYMPTOM/CONDITION

Noise in the bucket seat on subject model vehicles may be experienced under certain conditions of mating frame and hardware parts, and may result in a rattle and/or a squeak, usually while the vehicle is in motion over a moderate to lightly rough road surface. Use the following diagnosis to isolate the cause.

DIAGNOSIS

A. Rattles

Usually caused by vibrating metal-to-metal contact in an unoccupied seat resulting from:

1. Pivot bolt loose fit in back frame hole produces rattle from metal-to-metal contact.

2. Recliner assembly has loose mounting bolts.

3.. Seat or seat track mounting bolts loose.

B. Squeaks

Usually caused by sliding metal-to-metal contact resulting from seat structure flexing under load (occupied).

FIGURE 2 - Cushion Assembly:

1. The primary source of squeaks is found in the metal tabs extending down from the rear corners of the cushion frame rubbing on the heavier corner reinforcements (Figure 2).

C. Either one or both of the above conditions may be found.
PARTS REQUIRED

Spring Washer PN 6023086

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. After disconnecting the seat tracks from the floor, adjust the front seat to the full rear position (electric tracks - full rear and rear up), and the recliner/seat back to its most erect position.

2. Remove the seat assembly from the vehicle and invert on a clean work surface.

FIGURE 1 - Cushion Frame Pivot Arm:

3. Check the inboard pivot area for clearance between the back frame pivot arm and the cushion frame pivot arm (Figure 1).
4. Shake the seat back relative to the seat cushion to check for a loose fit of the pivot bolt in the back pivot arm (rattle potential).

5. Check the seat track-to-cushion frame mounting bolts for proper torque (200 inch pounds).

6. Check the recliner for loose mounting.

7. Remove the back assembly from the cushion pivot and the recliner.

FIGURE 1 - Cushion Frame Pivot Arm:

8. Insert a wavy spring washer, PN 6023086, between the back pivot arm and cushion pivot arm and reinstall the pivot bolt (Figure 1).
NOTE: FOR EXCESSIVE CLEARANCE (2 mm/.080 INCH) BETWEEN SEAT BACK AND CUSHION PIVOT ARMS, USE TWO (2) WASHERS. NO MORE THAN TWO (2) WASHERS SHOULD BE USED PER SEAT. TIGHTEN THE SHOULDER BOLT TO 420 INCH POUNDS.

CAUTION: MAKE SURE THAT WASHER IS FREE TO ROTATE BEFORE TIGHTENING PIVOT BOLT.

FIGURE 2 - Cushion Assembly:

9. Locate the lower rear corner tabs on each side of the cushion frame (Figure 2).

10. Using a suitable tool, bend the tabs away from the seat tracks (upward in car position) until the tabs have a minimum of 1/8" clearance to the side reinforcements (containing the track mounting weld nuts) - (Figure 2).
11. Reconnect the recliner to the seat back and install the recliner shields. Recliner mounting screws should be tightened to 250 inch pounds.

12. Install the seat assembly into the vehicle.
