A/T - FWD Drive Gear Whine Noise at 40-50 MPH

SUBJECT: 84/85 FWD CHRYSLER (Except Imports)

SYMPTOM:
Drive gear noise (whine) from transfer shaft and ring gear at 40-50 mph.

CHECKOUT:
Check vehicle on a smooth surface with transaxle at normal operating temperature at speeds between 40-50 mph. If drive gear noise is verified, do the following:




A SOLUTION:
Remove air inlet hose from air cleaner.
Thread damper weight onto the end of the left-hand motor mount through-bolt (threads protrude into the engine compartment). (See illustration)

Torque damper weight to 200 +/- 30 inch pounds.

Reinstall air cleaner inlet hose
Road test vehicle to verify improvement.
