1.Manual Transaxle Linkage System - Cable Operated
A. ReplaceShift cable clips should be replaced during any servicing in which they are removed (i.e. replacing cables).
Before replacing the gearshift selector cable or crossover cable for a "hard shifting" complaint, disconnect both cables at the transaxle. Then, from the driver's seat, manually operate the gearshift lever through all gear ranges. If the gearshift lever moves smoothly, the cables should not be replaced.
B. Adjust
1. Working over the left front fender, remove the lock pin from the transaxle selector shaft housing .
2. Reverse the lock pin (so that long end is down) and insert into same threaded hole while pushing the selector shaft into the selector housing. A hole in the selector shaft will align with the lock pin to be screwed into the housing. This operation locks the selector shaft in the 1- 2 neutral position.
3. Remove shift knob. Then remove console and boot as one unit over the reverse pull-up ring ("S" body vehicles require boot removal prior to console removal).
4. Loosen selector and crossover cable adjusting screws at the shifter. Insert selector cable and crossover cable adjusting pins. Insure that proper adjusting pin is used with each individual shifter, which vary by shifter model. Pins must fit snug.
5. With adjusting pins in place, tighten both the selector cable adjusting screw and crossover cable adjusting screw to 55 in.lbs. This specification is extremely important because if the screws are under torqued, adjustment slippage may occur. Or, if they are over torqued, the adjustment assembly may be damaged.
6. Remove lock pin from selector shaft housing and reinstall lock pin (so that tong end is up) in selector shaft housing. Tighten lock pin to 12 N-m (105 in.lbs.).
NOTE: THIS STEP MUST BE PERFORMED WITH ADJUSTING PINS IN SHIFTER. THIS IS TO PREVENT POSSIBLE BENDING OF LOCK PIN IF PRESSURE IS APPLIED TO SHIFTER.
7. Remove both adjusting pins from shifter.
8. Check for shift into all gear positions. Check for blockout into reverse.
9. Gearshift cables are now properly adjusted.
C. Routing
Cables are to be routed above the heat shield away from the exhaust system and forward of the speedometer cable.
D. Don't Repair Stripped Gearshift Knob
If you find that the threads in the gearshift lever knob are stripped, do not attempt to repair them with an adhesive; the knob will work loose again. Replace with a new gearshift knob with metal threaded insert.
