SYMPTOM/CONDITION
Grinding noise and/or failure of the torque converter and front pump.
DIAGNOSIS
Check for a loose or cracked torque converter drive plate. If no trouble is found, then the problem could be caused by an undersized torque converter-to-crankshaft adapter.
PARTS REQUIRED
1 - Adapter PN MD024893
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Remove transaxle and torque converter assembly (refer to the 1984 Front Wheel Drive Service Manual for removal and installation details).
2. Measure the inside diameter of the torque converter-tocrankshaft adapter with an inside micrometer. The I.D. should be no smaller than 33.98 mm (1.34"). If the diameter is smaller, remove the existing adapter and replace with new adapter.
NOTE: IF THE I.D. OF THE ADAPTER IS VERY ROUGH IN FINISH, IT PROBABLY IS UNDERSIZED AND SHOULD BE REPLACED. A CORRECTLY FINISHED ADAPTER WILL HAVE A VERY FINE, ALMOST MIRROR-LIKE FINISH ON THE INSIDE DIAMETER.
3. Inspect torque converter pilot. Disassemble the front pump and inspect for worn pump gears.
4. Reinstall transaxle and torque converter per service manual instructions.
5. Road test to verify satisfactory transaxle operation.
