SYMPTOM/CONDITION

Subject model passenger cars built before October 31, 1983, which have an electronic instrument cluster and electronic voice alert may not give an audible warning of a low fuel condition. This message should be given when the fuel gauge indicator is on the second (yellow) segment and the low fuel warning light is illuminated.

DIAGNOSIS

If the above condition is noted, verify that the electronic voice alert is otherwise in working condition. If so, proceed to the repair procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Remove the glove box and the electronic voice alert module to gain access to the electronic voice alert wiring harness.

2. Pull the 24-pin multiple wiring connector from the electronic voice alert module.

3. Remove both red retaining wedges from the multiple wiring connector.

4. Using a small thin-bladed screwdriver or similar thin, flat tool carefully work the light blue with red tracer (LB/RD*) wire from cavity 14 (Figure 1) of the multiple wiring connector.
5. Insert the light blue with red tracer (LB/RD*) wire into cavity 6 of the multiple wiring connector (previously not used). Assure that the wire is properly seated by tugging gently on it. It may be necessary to bend the terminal locking tang in some cases to provide proper terminal retention.

6. Insert both red retaining wedges into the multiple wiring connector.

7. Install the multiple wiring connector to the electronic voice alert module.

8. Verify proper operation of the low fuel warning system by disconnecting the wire from the fuel level sending unit to simulate an empty fuel tank. Turn on the ignition switch and listen for an audible low fuel warning. In addition, the instrument cluster fuel gauge indicator should be on the lowest (red) segment and the low fuel warning indicator should be illuminated. Reconnect the fuel level sending unit wiring.

9. Reinstall the electronic voice alert module and the glove box.
