Compressor HVAC: Testing and Inspection
COMPRESSOR OIL LEVEL ADJUSTMENT:
It is imperative to have the correct amount of oil in the A/C system to ensure the proper lubrication of the compressor. Too much oil will reduce cooling capacity of the system and result in higher discharge air temperatures, while too little oil will result in damage to the compressor.
The compressor is charged with the following amount of oil at the factory: 266 to 296 ml (9 to 10 fl oz.), to maintain the desired balance for adequate lubrication and cooling capacity.
The oil used in the compressor is a 500 SUS viscosity, wax-free refrigerant oil. Only refrigerant oil of the same type should be used to service the system. Do not use any other oil. The oil container should be kept tightly capped until it is ready for use, and then tightly capped after use to prevent contamination from dirt and moisture. Refrigerant oil quickly absorbs any moisture it comes in contact with.
It is not necessary to check the oil level in the compressor or to add oil unless there has been an oil loss due to a ruptured line, shaft seal leakage, leakage from the evaporator, condensor, filter drier or loss due to a collision. Evidence of a leak will be the presence of a wet, shiny surface around the leak. The "Compressor Oil Level Adjustment" chart should be followed to determine the need to perform an oil level adjustment.
