SYMPTOM/CONDITION
Subject vehicles may experience engine "motor boating" noise heard through the speakers when playing cassettes. The noise changes in frequency with engine rpm, and is most noticeable in tape quiet passages. This noise is induced into the radio's tape pre-amp from nearby wiring.
PARTS REQUIRED
Cassette Radio Noise Wiring Overlay Package PN 4364472
Consists of:
1 - Wiring Overlay PN 4331839
4 - Clips PN 6015328
Foam Tape PN 4274258
DIAGNOSIS
With the ignition switch in the accessory position, insert a cassette with a blank passage (usually at the beginning or end of a cassette) into the radio, and turn the volume control to maximum volume. The only noise will be a slight tape hiss. Turn down the volume control (volume level would be excessive in radio mode), start the engine, reinsert the cassette, and turn the volume control to maximum volume. If the vehicle has the noise problem, then the noise will be a "motor boating" that varies in pitch with the engine rpm. If the vehicle does not have the noise, then the only noise will be a tape hiss.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
CAUTION: THIS WIRING ASSEMBLY REROUTES THE Z1 AND K2 CIRCUITS ALONG THE INSTRUMENT PANEL LOWER REINFORCEMENT. USE EXTREME CAUTION IN HANDLING, ROUTING, AND
INSTALLING THIS WIRING ASSEMBLY. AVOID ANY SHARP EDGES, SCREWS, OBJECTS, OR PROTRUSIONS WHICH MAY RUB AGAINST OR COME INTO CONTACT WITH THE WIRING ASSEMBLY.
1. Disconnect battery.
2. Remove right kick pad and unbolt logic module.
FIGURE 1 - LOCATION OF MAIN I/P HARNESS AND ENGINE WIRING 8 WAY CONNECTORS:
3. Disconnect the main instrument panel harness grey 8-way connector from the logic module and engine compartment wiring. This connector is located in the right kick pad area and may be tucked behind the logic module (Figure 1).
4. Some vehicles may have a radio choke jumper wiring assembly, PN 4304845, installed (in series) between the main I/P wiring 8-way connector halves. This jumper assembly would be wrapped in foam tape.
If the vehicle has the radio choke jumper, remove the jumper assembly and replace it with the cassette fix Wiring Assembly PN 4331839. Be sure to reconnect the choke to the new assembly and wrap with foam tape.
If the vehicle does not have the radio jumper assembly previously described, then connect the cassette fix Wiring Assembly PN 4331839 between the main I/P harness and engine wiring 8-way connectors. Carefully fold the excess length created between the two 8-way connectors and wrap with foam tape.
5. Remove ash receiver and ash receiver receptacle (not required for "E" body New Yorker with center console).
6. Install 4 clips along instrument panel lower reinforcement bottom edge as shown in Figure 2 (2 clips behind glove box, 1 clip behind ash receiver, 1 clip next to steering column). This may require removing the glove box.
7. Carefully route the cassette fix wiring assembly along the route shown in Figure 2. Follow the bottom edge of the instrument panel lower reinforcement (behind glove box and ash receiver).
CAUTION: ROUTE THE WIRING ASSEMBLY BELOW THE INSTRUMENT PANEL LOWER REINFORCEMENT AWAY FROM THE TWO SHARP DUCT MOUNTING SCREWS (FIGURE 2). USE EXTREME CARE TO PREVENT ANY SHARP EDGES, SCREWS, OBJECTS, OR PROTRUSIONS FROM RUBBING, SCRAPING, OR OTHERWISE DAMAGING THE CASSETTE FIX WIRING ASSEMBLY. CAUTION MUST BE USED BECAUSE THIS WIRING ASSEMBLY REROUTES THE Z1 AND K2 SAFETY CIRCUITS.
For the "E" body New Yorker with the center console it is not necessary to remove the ash receiver and ash receiver receptacle. Instead, route the cable behind the center console. Pull the carpeted side of the center console loose from the velcro fasteners, and carefully route the wiring assembly behind the center console assembly. Take care to prevent pinching or scissoring the wiring assembly when operating the drawers, etc. of the center console.
FIGURE 3 - LOCATION OF 25 WAY INSTRUMENT PANEL TO BODY WIRING CONNECTOR:
8. Continue routing the cassette fix wiring assembly up and over the steering column, over to the fuse block, and to the 25-way instrument panel to body wiring connector (Figures 2 and 3).

9. Unplug the body wiring insulator containing the Z1 (dark green with white tracer) and GFI (black with red tracer) circuits from cavities 19 and 20 of the 25-way instrument panel to body wiring connector (Figures 3 and 4). Plug this body wiring insulator into the cassette fix wiring assembly. Plug the cassette fix wiring assembly insulator with the red wire into cavities 19 and 20 of the 25-way instrument panel to body wiring connector (Figures 3 and 4).

FIGURE 6 - FUSE BLOCK SHOWING-CAVITY 16 AND K2 CIRCUIT (BROWN/WHITE):
10. Remove the fuse block access cover. Slide the fuse block out from the instrument panel. Remove fuse #16 (20 amp, yellow). Remove circuit K2 (14 gauge, brown/white) wire fromn cavity 16. Tape terminal, then tape wire back into harness (Figures 4 and 6). Insert the terminal of the cassette fix wiring harness brown wire (circuit K2) into fuse block cavity 16 (Figures 5 and 6). Slide the fuse block back into the instrument panel. Reinstall fuse #16.
11. At this point the cassette fix wiring assembly is completely connected. Make sure that the logic module is connected and that all the fuses are installed. Reconnect battery and start the engine. Verify that the engine runs properly, that no fuses are blown, and that the engine "fuel injector motor boating" noise is no longer heard through the sound system when playing cassettes. Be sure that the cassette fix wiring assembly does not hang below the instrument panel. Once normal operation has been verified, turn off the engine and reinstall the logic module, kick pad, ash receiver, ash receiver receptacle, fuse block cover, etc.
