SYMPTOM/CONDITION

Long cold engine crank times (up to 5 seconds) and repeated driveway dieout after cold engine starting.

Subject model vehicles authorized to receive this service can be identified by Hose Routing Label PN 4307416 (Federal and High Altitude) and PN 4307417 (California). This fix is scheduled to production in mid-December.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

Installation

1. Cut the 3/16" vacuum hose from the "F" connector to choke vacuum kick diaphragm 1-1/2" from the diaphragm end.

2. Install the Vacuum Delay Valve, PN 4173433, in the cut hose (Figure 1).

IMPORTANT: THE ORANGE END OF THE DELAY VALVE MUST BE ORIENTED TO THE VACUUM KICK DIAPHRAGM (FIGURE 1).

3. Type the following information on the Authorized Modification Label PN 4275086 (Figure 2).

Upper Section

Choke Vacuum Kick Delay Valve Package PN (see parts list)

Lower Section

Change Authority - TSB #14-48-83. Dealer Code - your dealer code. Date - date this service performed.

Install label next to or near original VECI label.

4. Clean the original hose routing label and apply supplied hose routing label over original.
5. To maximize the effect of this service, it is highly recommended that you remind the customer of the correct cold start procedure for the 1984 2.2L engine as outlined in the owners manual. That is: "Depress the accelerator pedal to the floor and release. Turn ignition key to start position and release key when engine starts. The vehicle may be placed into gear after starting with no kickdown."


This bulletin is released in advance of parts availability. The parts listed in this bulletin will be available in late November.
