SYMPTOM/CONDITION
Gear clash during shift into 5th gear.
FIGURE 1:
DIAGNOSIS
Check transaxle shift linkage adjustment and correct as required. If 5th gear clash is still evident after linkage adjustment, then the condition may be caused by insufficient oiling of the 5th gear bore and intermediate shaft journal (Figure 1). Lubrication for the intermediate shaft and 5th gear synchronizer assembly is supplied by an oiler located in the transaxle end cover. The length of the oiler tube was increased from 32 mm (1.25 in.) to 43 mm (1.69 in.) in order to provide additional lubrication for the intermediate shaft and synchronizer assembly.
PARTS REQUIRED
1 - Cover PN 4202860
REPAIR PROCEDURE
NOTE: TRANSAXLE REMOVAL IS NOT REQUIRED.
Refer to the appropriate model year service manual Group 21, "Service In Vehicle" section for disassembly, repair, and reassembly of the intermediate shaft and 5th speed synchronizer assemblies. Disassemble the transaxle far enough to inspect 5th speed synchronizer assembly and the 5th speed gear bushing surface. Inspect the synchronizer for seizing, fretting, or galling on the shaft. Check the synchronizer ring for cracking or other damage. Replace all damaged parts. Reassemble the transaxle and install the new end Cover, PN 4202860, with the 43 mm oiler.
Road test the vehicle to check transaxle operation.
