SYMPTOM/CONDITION

Rattle from the camshaft and silent shaft chain area at the front of the engine accompanied by a broken camshaft timing chain guide PN MD021231 (Figure 1).

DIAGNOSIS

Inspect for:

1. Blocked oil feed hole to the timing chain hydraulic chain tensioner located in the oil pump housing (Figure 2). Blockage occurs when a section of the oil pump mounting gasket collapses into the channel in the pump cover which directs oil from the main oil gallery in the block to the chain tensioner feed hole.

2. Lockwasher, PN MF450404, may also be missing from between silent shaft chain guide "B" pivot bolt and timing chain guide (Figure 3)..

PARTS REQUIRED

1 - Oil Pump Mounting Gasket PN MD060521
1 - Lockwasher PN MF450404
1 - Timing Chain Guide PN MD021231

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Remove chain case cover, silent shaft chain, camshaft chain, and broken chain guide.

2. Remove engine oil pump and clean all traces of old mounting gasket from pump and engine block.

3. Obtain new gasket PN MD060521 and, using a sharp knife, rework by cutting out portion of gasket within dotted lines indicated in Figure 4.
NOTE: DISREGARD REWORK INSTRUCTIONS IN STEP 3 IF NEW GASKET ALREADY HAS HOLE CUT OUT.

THIS CHANGE WAS INCORPORATED IN ENGINES IN PRODUCTION, APPROXIMATELY 84-04-01, (ENGINE BUILD DATE, CODE 7-282), AND WILL BE IN SERVICE REPLACEMENT GASKETS AT A LATER DATE.

4. Reinstall pump using reworked mounting gasket.

5. Install new Timing Chain Guide PN MD021231.

6. Install timing chain, silent shaft chain, and guides according to instructions contained in the applicable service manual.

NOTE: ENSURE THAT LOCKWASHER PN MF450404 IS IN PLACE AS INDICATED IN FIGURE 3.

7. Install chain case cover.
