This bulletin supersedes all prior oil pressure test procedures and pressure values in all 1981-1984 domestic and import service manuals.

Today's engines have different oil pressure requirements than in the past. Oil pressure in these engines may be relatively lower than earlier model engines because of lower idle speeds, lower viscosity oils, or different oil demands. Relatively lower oil pressure at curb idle speed does not affect the reliability of the engine.

The following oil pressure test procedure applies to all domestic and import cars and trucks.

OIL PRESSURE TESTING PROCEDURE

1. Check oil level and adjust to full as necessary.

2. Warm engine at high idle until thermostat opens.

NOTE: CHECK FOR PROPER OPERATION OF THERMOSTAT. COOLANT TEMPERATURE MUST REACH 185~F OR HIGHER.

3. Check curb idle speed as per the appropriate Driveability Test Procedure or service manual. Adjust, if necessary, to obtain correct idle speed.

4. Attach a pressure gauge as indicated in the service manual..

NOTE: USE A PRESSURE GAUGE THAT IS KNOWN TO BE ACCURATE. THE ACCURACY OF THE GAUGE IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT, ESPECIALLY DURING THE OIL PRESSURE TEST AT CURB IDLE.

FIGURE 1:

5. Start engine and test oil pressure for (a) minimum pressure reading at curb idle and (b) minimum pressure at 3000 rpm. to the attached chart for minimum oil pressures (Figure 1).
CAUTION: IF PRESSURE IS "0" PSI AT CURB IDLE, DO NOT RUN ENGINE AT 3000 RPM.
6. If oil pressure is below the minimum specification, then change the oil and oil filter.

7. Run the engine for 5 minutes to stabilize oil temperature and rerun Steps 4 and 5 of the test. If oil pressure test results are OK, then no further action is necessary.

If either of the pressure test results are not OK, then refer to the appropriate service manual, Section 09, Low Oil Pressure Diagnosis, for the make and model year vehicle.
