Description of Symptom and Condition

SYMPTOM/CONDITION

Engine sags and/or exhibits poor performance following a hot soak restart.

FUEL VOLATILITY IS ONE OF THE FACTORS THAT CAN CAUSE FUEL FOAMING, SO IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THE CUSTOMER TRY ANOTHER BRAND OF FUEL BEFORE ANY OF THESE REPAIR PACKAGES ARE INSTALLED.

DIAGNOSIS

After engine is at full operating temperature, shut off and wait about 25 minutes (condition may actually occur from 5 minutes to as much as 60 minutes of hot soak). Restart engine and accelerate at three quarters to full throttle within the first 1/2 mile of driving. If engine sags or performs poorly, look for black smoke coming out of the tailpipe. If no smoke is apparent, move vehicle to the shoulder of the road if possible. Remove air cleaner top and look for fuel wetness at the air horn, air cleaner gasket, and under side of air cleaner. If you verify either of the above conditions (black smoke or fuel wetness), the vehicle has probably experienced fuel foaming.
