Silent Shaft Chain and Timing Chain Installation

Fig. 9 Camshaft drive chain, replace:

Fig. 11 Timing chain installation:

1. Install sprocket holder, then left and right chain guides, Fig. 11.
2. Rotate crankshaft until No. 1 piston is at TDC on compression stroke.
3. Install tensioner spring assembly onto oil pump body, Fig. 9.
4. Install timing chain on camshaft sprocket and crankshaft sprocket. Ensure timing marks are aligned, Fig. 11. Timing marks on sprockets are punch marks on teeth while timing marks on chain are plated links.
5. Align crankshaft sprocket to crankshaft keyway and slide into place. Align camshaft sprocket dowel hole to camshaft dowel hole.
6. Install dowel pin, then the distributor drive gear. Install sprocket screw onto camshaft and torque to 40 ft. lbs.

Fig. 8 Silent shaft drive chain, replace:

7. Install silent shaft chain drive sprocket on crankshaft.
8. Install silent shaft chain to oil pump sprocket and to silent shaft sprocket. Make sure timing marks are aligned. The timing marks on the sprockets are the punch marks on the teeth while those on the chain are the plated links.
9. Holding the parts assembled in Step 2 with both hands, align the crankshaft sprocket plated link with the punch mark on the sprocket.
10. With chain installed on crankshaft sprocket, install the oil pump sprocket and silent chain sprocket on their respective shafts.
11. Install oil pump and silent shaft sprocket screws and tighten to 34 Nm (25 ft. lbs.).
12. Loosely install the three chain guides.

13. Adjust the silent shaft chain tension as follows:
- Tighten Chain Guide A mounting screws.
- Tighten Chain Guide C mounting screws.
- Shake oil pump and silent shaft sprockets to collect chain slack at point "P".
- Adjust the position of chain guide B so that when the chain is pulled in the direction of arrow F with finger tips, the clearance between chain guide B and the chain links will be 1 - 3.5mm (0.04 - 0.14 in.). Tighten chain guide B mounting screws.
14. Fit new chain case cover gaskets to the chain case. Trim as required to assure fit at top and bottom.
15. Coat the cover gaskets with Sealant 3419115 or equivalent and install coated gaskets and chain case to block and snug mounting screws.
16. Reinstall cylinder head screws to chain case and tighten to 18 Nm (156 in. lbs.).

17. Remove cover on access hole in chain case cover.
18. Loosen Special Bolt "B".
19. Apply finger pressure on boss as shown in. Do not use screwdriver or other implement to apply tension.
20. Tighten Special Bolt "B" to 18 Nm (160 in. lbs.).
