Air Injection Pump: Service and Repair
Servicing of the air pump is limited to replacement of the centrifugal fan filter or the entire air pump assembly. Do not disassemble the air pump assembly.
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Disconnect air and vacuum hoses from diverter or [1][2]air switching valves.
3. Remove [1][2]air switching valve (combination switch/relief valve) from air pump.
4. Loosen air pump pivot and adjusting bolts. Remove drive belt.
5. On vehicles equipped with air conditioning, remove bracket retaining bolts and bracket from air pump.
6. Remove air pump bolts, pulley and air pump from vehicle.
7. Reverse procedure to install. On 4 cylinder engines, torque air pump mounting bolts to 29 ft lbs. Torque air pump bracket bolts to 40 ft lbs. Torque air pump pulley bolts to 105 inch lbs. On 4-135/2.2L engines, torque air pump pulley shield nuts and bolts and [1][2]air switching valve (combination switch/relief valve) mounting bolts to 125 inch lbs. On 4-97.4/1.6L and 4-105/1.7 engines, torque air pump pivot and adjusting bolts to 250 inch lbs. On 6 and V8 engines, torque air pump mounting bolts to 220 inch lbs. Torque air pump pulley bolts to 105 inch lbs. Torque air pump bracket bolts to 30 ft lbs. Torque air switching valve (combination switch/relief valve) bolts to 125 inch lbs.
