Diagnostic Instructions

* Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle prior to using this diagnostic procedure.

* Review Strategy Based Diagnosis Strategy Based Diagnosis for an overview of the diagnostic approach.

* Diagnostic Procedure Instructions Diagnostic Procedure Instructions provides an overview of each diagnostic category.

DTC Descriptor

DTC P0016

-
Crankshaft Position (CKP) Camshaft Position (CMP) Correlation.

Circuit/System Description

The engine control module (ECM) monitors the crankshaft position (CKP) and the camshaft position (CMP) signals to determine if the camshaft and crankshaft are synchronized. If both signals are not observed by the ECM within a narrow time window, the ECM will determine that an error has occurred.

Conditions for Running the DTC

* DTCs P0191 and P0315 are not set.

* The engine speed is greater than 600 RPM.

* DTC P0016 runs continuously when the above conditions are met.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

The ECM detects the average camshaft offset is greater than -20 degrees for greater than 3 s.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

DTC P0016 is a type B DTC.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

DTC P0016 is a type B DTC.

Diagnostic Aids

* Inspect the engine for any recent engine mechanical repairs. An incorrectly installed camshaft, camshaft sensor, crankshaft sensor, or timing gear can cause this DTC to set.

* If P0016 sets the fuel injectors will be commanded OFF and the engine will not start.

Circuit/System Testing

1. Idle the engine at normal operating temperature. Observe the DTC information with a scan tool. DTC P0016 should not set.

If a DTC sets, inspect for the following:

* The correct installation of the camshaft sensor

* The correct installation of the crankshaft sensor

* A camshaft or crankshaft sensor for damage.

* Front engine cover damage.

* Incorrectly installed timing gears

* Excessive play in the timing gears

* Excessive camshaft end play. Inspect the camshaft thrust plate.

* Timing gears that jumped teeth.

* A camshaft or crankshaft reluctor or exciter ring for damage.

If you find a condition, repair as necessary.

2. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC to verify the DTC does not reset. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records data.
