Circuit/System Description
The exhaust gas temperature sensors are variable resistors that measure the temperature of the exhaust gas at the inlet and outlet of the diesel oxidation catalyst as well as the inlet and outlet of the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). The Engine Control Module (ECM) supplies a bias 5-volt signal to the exhaust gas temperature sensor signal circuit, and supplies a ground to the low reference circuit. The exhaust gas temperature information is used by the ECM during the particulate filter cleaning process.
The following table illustrates the relationship between the temperature of the exhaust gas, and the resistance and voltage of the exhaust gas temperature sensor.
Conditions for Running the DTC
P113A
* DTC P0112, P0113, P242C, P242D, P2470, or P2471 is not set.
* The ignition has been OFF for greater than 8 hours.
* The engine is running.
* The ambient air temperature is greater than -60°C (-76°F).
* DTC P113A runs once per key cycle when the above conditions are met.
P20E2
Condition 1
* DTC P0016, P0112, P0113, P0335, P0336, P0340, P0341, P0545, P0546, P2032, or P2033 is not set.
* The ignition has been OFF for greater than 8 hours.
* The engine is running.
* The ambient air temperature is greater than -60°C (-76°F).
OR
Condition 2
* DTC P0016, P0112, P0113, P0335, P0336, P0340, P0341, P0545, P0546, P2032, or P2033 is not set.
* The ignition has been OFF for greater than 8 hours.
* The engine is running.
* The ambient air temperature is greater than -60°C (-76°F).
* In the first 60 s of engine run time, the ECM determines that the engine block heater is OFF.
DTC P02E0 runs once per key cycle when condition 1 or condition 2 above is met.
Conditions for Setting the DTC
P113A
The ECM detects, at engine start, that a temperature difference of greater than 30°C (54°F), exists between exhaust gas temperature sensor 3 and exhaust gas temperature sensor 4.
P20E2
Condition 1
The ECM detects, at engine start, that a temperature difference of greater than 100°C (180°F), exists between exhaust gas temperature sensor 1 and exhaust gas temperature sensor 2.
OR
Condition 2
The ECM determines the temperature difference between the exhaust gas temperature sensor 1 and exhaust gas temperature sensor 2 is greater than 30°C (54°F), but less than or equal to 100°C (180°F), after 60 s of engine run time.
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
DTCs P113A and P20E2 are Type B DTCs.
Conditions for Clearing the DTC
DTCs P113A and P20E2 are Type B DTCs.
Diagnostic Aids
A slight to moderate resistance in either the signal or low reference circuits, can widen the spread between the exhaust gas temperature sensors, and cause the DTCs to set.

Circuit/System Verification
Note: Determine the ambient temperature by using an accurate thermometer.
1. Ignition OFF for greater than 8 hours, observe the scan tool EGT Sensor 1-4 parameters and compare them to the ambient temperature. The readings for EGT sensors 1-4 should be within 30°C (54°F) of each other and the ambient temperature.
2. Ignition ON, observe the scan tool EGT Sensor 1-4 parameters. The readings should be between -40-999°C (-38-1,830°F) depending on the current ambient temperature and the vehicle operating conditions
3. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC to verify the DTC does not reset. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records data.
Circuit/System Testing
Note: Perform the Repair Verification after completing the Circuit/System Testing.
1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate B131 EGT sensor.
2. Ignition OFF and all vehicle systems OFF. It may take up to 2 minutes for all vehicle systems to power down. Test for less than 5 ohm between the low reference circuit terminal B and ground.
• If greater than the specified range, test the low reference circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 ECM.
3. Ignition ON, verify the scan tool EGT Sensor parameter is greater than 998°C (1,828°F).
• If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit terminal A for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 ECM.
4. Install a 3 A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal A and the low reference circuit terminal B. Verify the scan tool EGT Sensor parameter is less than -35°C (-31°F).
• If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 ECM.
5. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the B131 Exhaust Gas Temperature sensor.
Component Testing
Note: The J 25070 Heat Gun may be used to evaluate the sensor under high temperature conditions.
Measure and record the resistance of the affected B131 exhaust gas temperature sensor and compare the measurements to the Temperature Versus Resistance Temperature Versus Resistance.
