DTC C0283 (W/JL4)
Circuit Description
The traction control switch is a momentary-contact, normally-open switch that can be used to disable the engine torque management function of the traction control system (TCS). On 2-wheel drive or all wheel drive vehicles, the traction control switch is directly monitored by the electronic brake control module (EBCM). On 4-wheel drive vehicles equipped with selectable 4 LO, the traction control switch is monitored by the transfer case shift control module (TCSCM), which sends the traction control switch status information to the EBCM on the serial data link. Each time the traction control switch is pressed, the vehicle stability enhancement system (VSES) and TCS enabled/disabled status changes. When TCS is disabled, the EBCM sends serial data messages to the instrument panel cluster (IPC) to turn ON the traction OFF indicator and display the stability system disabled message.
DTC Descriptor
This diagnostic procedure supports the following DTC:
DTC C0283 Mode Switch Circuit Malfunction
Conditions for Running the DTC
The ignition is ON.
Conditions for Setting the DTC
Two Wheel Drive or All Wheel Drive Vehicles
The EBCM detects low voltage on the traction control switch signal circuit for 8 seconds.
Four Wheel Drive Vehicles with Selectable 4 LO
The EBCM receives a serial data message from the TCSCM indicating that the VSES mode/transfer case shift control switch is detected as failed. The TCSCM sends this message 60 seconds after the TCSCM sets DTC B2725.
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
^ The EBCM disables VSES and engine torque management.
^ The traction OFF indicator turns ON.
^ The message center displays the service stability system message.
Conditions for Clearing the DTC
The conditions for setting the DTC are no longer present and you use the scan tool Clear DTC's function.
Diagnostic Aids
Thoroughly inspect connections or circuitry that may cause an intermittent malfunction. Refer to the following:
^ Testing for Electrical Intermittents Component Tests and General Diagnostics

Test Description
The number below refers to the step number on the diagnostic table.
4. This step tests the traction control switch circuitry. If the fuse opens when you perform this test, the traction control switch signal circuit is shorted to ground.
