Tie Rod Replacement



Tie Rod Replacement

^ Tools Required
- J 24319-B Universal Steering Linkage Puller
- J 29194 Steering Linkage Installer-14 mm

Removal Procedure





1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.

2. Important: Use the J 24319-B in order to separate all the tie rods and ball joints.

Remove the nut (2) from the outer tie rod ball stud (3).





3. Use the J 24319-B in order to remove the outer tie rod ball stud from the steering knuckle.

4. Important: Do not reuse the nut.

Remove the tie rod end from the shaft by loosening the jam nut.
5. Remove the outer tie rod end from the relay rod.





6. Inspect the shaft (6) for bent or damaged threads.
7. Clean the tapered surface of the steering knuckle (1).

Installation Procedure





1. Lubricate the tie rod threads with chassis lubricant. Refer to Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations.
2. Install the tie rod end (4) to the shaft (6).
3. Install the outer tie rod ball stud (3) to the steering knuckle (1).





4. Install the new prevailing torque nut (2) to the outer tie rod ball stud (3).
^ Tighten the nut to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.) for 15 series vehicles.
^ Tighten the nut to 65 Nm (48 ft. lbs.) for 25/35 series vehicles.
5. Adjust the front toe.
