Park Brake Shoe Replacement (25 Series)Removal Procedure
Caution: Refer to Brake Dust in Service Precautions.
1. Relieve the tension from the park brake cable by pulling down on the park brake cable in front of the equalizer then removing the cable from the equalizer bar.
2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting..
3. Remove the tire and the wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
4. Perform the following procedure to remove the cable (2) from the backing plate (4):
4.1. Compress the spring (3) by pushing towards the lever (1).
4.2. Depress the locking tabs.
4.3. Pull the cable housing out of the backing plate (4)
4.4. Remove the cable (2) through the slot in the backing plate.
5. Remove the park brake cable (2) from the lever (1).
6. Remove the rotor. Refer to Brake Rotor Replacement - Rear (W/NYS) or Brake Rotor Replacement - Rear (W/O NYS) in Disc Brakes.
7. Remove the rear axle shaft. Refer to Rear Axle Shaft Replacement (8.6 Inch Axle W/O JL4, 9.5 Inch Axle) or Rear Axle Shaft Replacement (8.6 Inch Axle WHILE) or Rear Axle Shaft Replacement (9.75 Inch Axle) in Rear Drive Axle.
8. Remove the park brake shoe return spring (6).
9. Remove the park brake shoe anchor springs and pins.
10. Separate the tips of the shoes from the park brake actuator and remove the park brake shoes and adjuster assembly from the vehicle.
Installation Procedure
1. Clean the debris and the dust from the park brake components using a clean shop cloth.
2. Install the adjuster assembly to the park brake shoes.
3. Separate the tips of the shoes and install the park brake shoes to the park brake actuator.
4. Install the park brake shoe anchor springs and pins.
5. Install the park brake shoe return spring (6).
6. Adjust the park brake shoe. Refer to Park Brake Adjustment.
7. Install the rear axle shaft. Refer to Rear Axle Shaft Replacement (8.6 Inch Axle W/O JL4, 9.5 Inch Axle) or Rear Axle Shaft Replacement (8.6 Inch Axle W/JL4) or Rear Axle Shaft Replacement (9.75 Inch Axle) in Rear Drive Axle.
3. Install the rotor. Refer to Brake Rotor Replacement - Rear (W/NYS) or Brake Rotor Replacement - Rear (W/O NYS) in Disc Brakes.
9. Install the park brake cable (2) to the lever (1).
10. Perform the following procedure to install the cable (2) to the backing plate (4):
10.1. Compress the spring (3) by pushing towards the lever (1).
10.2. Route the cable (2) through the slot in the backing plate.
10.3. Push the cable housing into the backing plate (4) until the locking tabs snap into place.
11. Install the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
12. Remove the safety stands.
13. Lower the vehicle.
14. Install the park brake cable to the equalizer by pulling down on the park brake cable in front of the equalizer then installing the cable to the equalizer bar.
15. Adjust the park brake cable. Refer to Park Brake Adjustment.
