Rear Axle Shaft Seal and/or Bearing Replacement

Tools Required
^ J8092 Universal Driver Handle - 3/4 in - 10
^ J21128Axle Pinion Oil Seal Installer
^ J23690 Bearing Installer
^ J02619-1 Slide Hammer
^ J29712 Wheel Bearing Remover
^ J44685 Rear Axle Seal and Bearing Remover
^ J45853 Rear Axle Bearing/Seal Installer

Removal Procedure
1. Raise the vehicle.
2. Remove the axle shaft.





3. If replacing only the axle shaft seal, remove the seal using a suitable seal removal tool.
4. If replacing the rear axle shaft seal and the bearing on the 8.6 inch axle, install the J44685 (1) and the J02619-1 (2) into the axle housing behind the axle bearing.
5. Remove the axle shaft seal and the bearing by pulling on the J02619-1.





6. If replacing the rear axle shaft seal and the bearing on the 9.75 inch axle, install the J29712 into the axle housing behind the axle bearing.
7. Remove the axle shaft seal and the bearing by tightening the nut on the J29712.

Installation Procedure





1. Install the axle shaft bearing using the J23690, 8.6 inch axle, or the J45853, 9.75 inch axle (1) and the J8092 (2).
2. Drive the axle shaft bearing into the axle housing until the tool bottoms against the tube.





3. For the 3.6 inch axle, install the axle shaft seal using the J21128.

Ensure the seal is fully seated in the axle tube.





4. For the 9.75 inch axle, install the axle shaft seal using the J45853 (2) and the J8092 (1).

Ensure the seal is fully seated in the axle tube.
5. Install the axle shaft.
6. Fill the rear axle.
7. Lower the vehicle.
