Oil Pan Replacement - Upper

Removal Procedure
1. Remove the oil level indicator tube.
2. Disconnect the relay rod from the pitman arm and idler arm, if necessary.
3. Remove the lower oil pan.
4. Remove the engine flywheel.
5. Remove the two flywheel housing to upper oil pan bolts.
6. Remove the upper oil pan bolts and any brackets. Mark the bolt location of the bracket.
7. Separate the upper oil pan from the engine block using J37228.
8. Remove the upper oil pan.
9. If required, clean and inspect the upper oil pan.
Installation Procedure
1. Apply a 2 - 3 mm (0.79 - 0.118 inch) wide by 0.5 - 1.5 mm (0.02 - 0.06 inch) bead of sealant GM P/N 97720043 (Canadian P/N 88901148), or equivalent to the upper oil pan mating surfaces.
2. Apply a 2 - 3 mm (0.79 - 0.118 inch) wide by 0.5 - 1.5 mm (0.02 - 0.06 inch) bead of sealant GM P/N 97720043 (Canadian P/N 88901148), or equivalent to the flywheel housing sealing surface.
3. Install the upper oil pan to the engine block. Ensure the oil level indicator tube is installed into the upper oil pan.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
4. Install any brackets and the upper oil pan bolts in the sequence shown.
Tighten the bolts to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
5. Install the two flywheel housing to upper oil pan bolts.
Tighten the bolts to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
6. Install the battery cable bracket bolts.
Tighten the bolts to 12 Nm (106 inch lbs.).
7. Install the battery cable bracket nut.
Tighten the nut to 8 Nm (71 inch lbs.).
8. Install the engine flywheel.
9. Install the lower oil pan.
10. Connect the relay rod to the pitman arm and idler arm, if necessary.
11. Lower the vehicle.
12. Install the oil level indicator tube.
Tighten the bolt to 21 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
13. Fill the engine with oil.
